Monterrico, Guatemala, lies along the Pacific Coast of Guatemala. For centuries, turtles have used the narrow strip of black sand beach as the perfect incubator for their fragile eggs. Today, competition with human activities threaten some of the world's last remaining turtles.
The Center for the Study of Conservation, a department of Guatemala's university system, is in Monterrico to protect the turtles and surrounding mangrove forests.
