Description

A woman of no importance, she manoeuvres in her restricted circumstances as her long-time love Captain Wentworth did in the wars. Even though she is nearly thirty, well past the sell-by bloom of youth, Austen makes her win out for herself and for others like herself, in a regenerated society.

This is my favorite Jane Austen book as it is a little unusual for her.

Appreciating Austen now in a way I didn’t understand her in high school I’m so glad to be getting the opportunity to read her works now.

2 stars is being generous. This story slogs along in a boring age when people are purely narcissistic. Very dissapointing.

I’ve read every novel by Jane Austen. Persuasion is my absolute favorite. I read it at least once a year. This is her most mature writing. She captures the pain and longing of our heroine in such a relatable way that has stood the rest of time. Anne Elliot is a perpetual wall flower that falls in love with the manliest and most realistic of Austen’s heroes, Captain Wentworth. Youthfulness and selflessness work against her early engagement to him, and they are torn apart for eight long years. Those years have left her a miserable spinster and him fabulously wealthy. He returns to the area to flaunt it. They find themselves in each other’s company, and we the readers get to feel her deep regret of losing him. We cheer for her as she wades through waves of humiliation from her own flesh and blood. Yet, she isn’t a completely helpless sap as Fanny Price nor a selfish snot like Emma. Our hero is more gravitating with an actual male personality and temperament. Much to our dismay, Mr. Darcy is both unrealistic and dull in comparison to Wentworth. I’ll take the Navy hero any day over the droll. He actually acts like a man would in this situation and albeit in a foolish way. However, I know many a man that would act coldly toward an ex. He doesn’t disappoint in the end. Wentworth is devoted even more. Just read it and enjoy.

As Pride and Prejudice is witty and funny, the appeal of Persuasion is the sweetness of character of the heroine. Persuasion is such a tender love story it grabs your heart from the very first.

I've read all of Jane Austin's books and must say this might be my favorite!! It is truly a romance. Love endures through time and space, through age and circumstance. And only love can bring true happiness!

While Pride and Prejudice might be Austen's best-crafted plot and characters, Persuasion is her best page-turner. It is hard to put down and easy to quote!
